Tube baby is performed through the collection of female’s ovary, the retrieval of male sperm, and the integration of these reproductive cells into fertilization. In this process, the quality of the woman’s ovary and the sperm quality of the man are very important. In this process, the female sperm sample is collected on the ovary collection day and the process is performed. The sperm sample is usually taken by masturbating the male. If there is no sperm in the menstrual cycle, extra surgical procedures are performed and testicles get searched to find sperm. This process is called Tese, and the possibilities for finding sperm in this way range from 25% to 60% depending on the underlying factors. These procedures are performed under general or local anesthesia. When no sperm in the semen is observed in some of the patients; PESA, MESA, TESA and TESE operations are carried out. These surgical procedures are performed within a few days. As a result of the processes to be applied, there are generally about 65% live cells. In the case of receiving sperm samples, preparation processes for in vitro fertilization are used. These are separated in several and are kept on the appropriate conditions for microinjection.
Methods for obtaining sperm for tube babyIf there is no sperm in the semen in the treatment of IVF, it is called azoospermia. In such cases, surgical procedures are performed within a few days and sperm is most likely obtained. In general, when sperm cannot be found in semen, by Surgery usually sperm is obtained. For this; Micro TESE (Microdissection Testicular Sperm Extraction), TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction) and TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) are performed. If the male’s sperm ducts are clogged, in-vitro fertilization is performed. A very thin injection is inserted in the testicles to get sperm. This is called TESA or ESA application. In those males who have no obstruction of the sperm ducts and have fewer sperm in the testicles, the sperm is taken out of a small piece of the testicles texture. Many different methods have been applied for years to choose the best quality of these sperm obtained for IVF treatment and there are new methods in parallel with the progress of medical technology.
Sperm selection methods in IVF treatmentThe sperm obtained from the semen or from the testicles texture get washed, passed through the fluids of different intensities, filtered and applied with the most smoothly shaped, most vital spermatozoa using a microscope. During this selection, many different chemical methods are also used. Recently, a new method has been developed in addition to these. This method is called “chip”, “microchip use”.
Use of “chip” in tube babyIn this new “microchip use” method applied, sperm taken from a man is forced to pass through a very narrow space. As this space is too narrow, only the very live, healthy, quality sperms can pass through it. Preliminary studies of this method show that the “chip” method gives more successful results compared to the methods used up to now for sperm selection. However, the method is very new and requires more research, which makes this method a little skeptical.
The drawbacks of using “chip” in tube baby method
- This method is still very new and therefore it is beneficial to have some more experience.
- It is unlikely that this “chip” method will be applied to people with very low sperm counts or low-quality sperm counts.
